Plans for the New 2022/23 Season at the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre

14 September 2022

Dear friends, we have opened our new 2022/2023 season!

Throughout this year we will continue to listen to the world and to ourselves, as we continue to strive to make sense of the world around us.

Here are our large-scale plans:

The main project of the season will be The World of Rome, based on Shakespeare's four "Roman" tragedies. Graduates and trainees of MIR-6 (Studio of Individual Direction) will rethink these classic works within the framework of a new processual approach under the leadership of Boris Yukhananov.

The project will commence in the first half of the season with 20 performances on the small stage. It will involve more than 120 young directors and actors. In the season's second half, The World of Rome will move to the main stage and will engage actors of the Electrotheatre as we continue to develop the work into subsequent seasons.

The premiere of Boris Yukhananov's opera series The Nonsensorics of Dreems, created by composers Daria Zvezdina, Alexander Belousov, Vladimir Gorlinsky and Kirill Shirokov, will also be unveiled on the main stage in December. The libretto is a philosophical poem about an angel who dared to doubt that people are worthy of the Creator's gifts, and, as punishment, was sent to Earth to live as a human being.

In the second half of the season, Igor Lysov will show his main stage production of Chapter 12 of The Brothers Karamazov under the working title of The Karamazovs. The main characters will be played by actors of the Electrotheatre – Anton Torsukov, Mikhail Sokolov, Serafima Nizovskaya, Julia Abdel Fattah, Yury Duvanov, and Nikolai Trifilov.

Furthermore, in the second half of the season, a main stage production of Tennessee Williams' A Lovely Sunday for Creve Coeur will star Electrotheatre actresses Alla Kazakova, Maria Belyaeva, Irina Grinyova, Irina Savitkova and Tatyana Maist.

On the small stage in the second half of the season, Pavel Kravets will direct Alexander Ostrovsky's Women in Bonds with actors from our theater – Nikolai Trifilov, Yury Duvanov, Pavel Kravets, Pavel Shumsky, and Ykaterina Andreeva.

The Electro Staicase will continue to host events of interest. In the 1st half of the season, it will be the site of Chekhovism as staged by Serafima Nizovskaya, a work based on female monologues from the writings of Anton Chekhov. The performance features such actresses of the Electrotheatre as Anna Antosik, Inna Golovina, Anna Kapaleva, Daria Kolpikova, Irina Koreneva, Anna Mavlitova, Margot Movsesyan, Anna Senina, and Serafima Nizovskaya.

The Electrotheatre will continue to develop the potential of its Chamber Stage by cooperating with young directors and playwrights. Seven works have been performed here over the past season and a half. They include: Summer Wasps Bite us Even in November, directed by Varvara Obidor, a graduate of the Studio of Individual Direction; Some Phenomena Need Not be Named and Inside Eve, directed by Viktoria Petrenko; Belaqua, or Soon to be Forty, by MIR-5 graduates Pavel Kravets, Georgy Mansurov, Alexandra Rudik, and Yekaterina Ryakhovskaya; Spaceships on the Energies of Love, directed by Alberto al Cosmico; Two Portraits by Alexei Kruglov; and Not All is Shrovetide to the Cat, directed by Pavel Kravets.

We will also continue our collaboration with the Playwrights Workshop via a competition for young screenwriters and playwrights, as well as with several other organizations: GITIS, the Presidential Foundation for Cultural Initiatives, the Boris Shchukin Theatre Institute, NTV and Amedia. At the end of September, a mini-festival of readings of plays and scripts of finalists will be held on the Electrotheatre's main stage. These showings will be organized by directors who have graduated from GITIS, the Shchukin Institute, and Boris Yukhananov's MIR - Studio of Individual Direction. The five winners of the competition will be announced on September 24, and each will receive 1 million rubles for the implementation of their projects.

As a result of last season's collaborations, the Electrotheatre hosted the premiere of Shochimiki – Death by Flowers, staged by MIR-5 graduate Igor Makarov and playwright Dmitry Retikh.

We also continue our cooperation with the Center for Electroacoustic Music (CEAMMC) and composer Nikolai Popov, whose inaugural project was the multimedia opera Curiosity. In the spring of 2023 we will host a joint Audiovisual Theater concert on the Electrotheatre's main stage, where works by contemporary Russian and European composers will be performed. That will be followed in the summer by the Biomechanics festival of multimedia and electroacoustic music in the Electro Yard.

The performers of these events will be  residents of the Center who specialize in performing the latest electroacoustic music, sound experiments, and working with various media under the direction of Nikolai Popov. The performers will include Ignat Krasikov (clarinet), Yulia Migunova (cello), Maria Nigei (vocals), Venedikt Peunov (accordion), and Feodosia Mironova (piano). The projects will be accompanied by educational programs about electroacoustic music authored by Lyali Kandaurova, music journalist and winner of the Enlightener Prize.

It goes without saying that we will continue to develop the ElectroVoice program in tandem with music director Arina Zvereva, Anton Kostochkin, Dmitry Chebotaryov, and other company members of the Electrotheatre, as well as to host a full schedule of educational and performative projects in our Electrozone. And let's not forget the current repertoire — we will continue to perform it with renewed vigor.

Our theatre troupe has been filled out with two young actors, Kirill Turutin and Grigory Nekrasov, graduates of St. Petersburg State University.

We look forward to seeing you at our theatre this season!
