As one of Bunin’s heroines says: “Is there such a thing as unhappy love? Doesn’t even the most pitiful music in the world provide happiness?” Broken hearts, officers shooting themselves, innocence defiled… Bunin’s tales never strive for a happy end, but the do end in those ruins that are capable of giving a person a personality and a biography. This production by young director Svetlana Prokhorova suggests that love may not be safe, but we cannot do without it.
