Dariusz Kosinski. Polish Theatre. Stories
Edited by Natalia Yakubova, translated by Natalia Yakubova and Maria Yasinskaya
Moscow: NLO, 2018.

This book traces the history of Polish thought from the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries to the present. The author, in accordance with the latest trends in international theatre scholarship, understands this art form in a performative manner - as a public event that depends equally on its creators and the public that it attracts over and over again. The book covers not only theatrical activities in the strict sense of the word, but also ceremonies, manifestations, anniversaries, shows and rituals. It contains five parallel stories about the theatre of holidays, the theatre of transfiguration, the theatre of power, the national theatre and the theatre of a “cultured city.” They form an interesting narrative about Polish culture with a special focus on its theatrical aspects.

Dariusz Kosinski is a professor in the Department of Performance, Department of Polonistics at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, and a scholar of Polish theatrical traditions, including acting and directing.
