Another fascinating screening from the CINE FANTOM Film Club at the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre. This film by poet Sergei Solovyov explores an ancient, pre-Hindu magic ritual that has been preserved almost unchanged to the present day in the far-flung state of Kerala in South India, and is almost unknown beyond its borders despite its ethnographic and aesthetic significance. The ritual takes place in the form of a costumed mystery that is performed by actor-mediums who enter a trance and act out various scenes from epics and legends in ecstatic dance. During this rite, the line between art and destiny is blurred. The film was shot in 2018 over a period of seven days and nights that the filmmaker spent among the performers of this unique rite.

Sergei Solovyov is a poet, traveler, and author of more than 20 books of poetry, prose, essays and travel essays. He is a laureate of the Russian Prize, a finalist of the Booker Prize, and the Andrei Bely prize. He lives in Munich.

Introductory talk will be delivered by Natalya Isaeva, a scholar of Indian studies, philosophy and theatre.
