In the creative method of French composer Colin Roche the written notations of thoughts are an intermediary between the author (composer) and the performer (musician). Placed firmly in the surroundings of everyday life, they reveal an attention to writing that evokes both bodily tension and the mnemonic feat of memory.

The composer makes this process explicit for everyone and calls into question the proportion between the writing process and the preparation for it, exposing the silence surrounding the gesture of the hand and the movement of the pen on the paper.

This performance will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the foyer of the Stanislavsky Electrotheatre. The author sits at the table and records silence. At any time, those who wish can sit with the author and hear the music of silence. While the composer composes, special equipment tracks and records his pulse. The values of the heart rhythm are recorded: this is the score of silence, "The Book of Numbers" as Roche terms it.

The viewer bears witness to an of creation and participates in its development.

Dmitri Kourliandski Converses with Colin Roche: 4 p.m.

Colin Roche is a composer, a pianist by education, and a graduate of Sciences Po. He studied conducting, writing (discovering a creative signature), musical analysis, music history, and aesthetics. He was awarded two gold medals in the nomination Culture Musicale et Composition by the Society of Music Authors, Composers and Publishers. He holds a master's degree and defended his degree in musicology.

His compositions are performed by such international ensembles as Intercontemporain, MASM, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne in Montreal, 2e2m, l'Itinéraire, Cairn, l'Instant Donné, Multilatérale, Smash Ensemble, Manfred Quartet, and Psophos Quartet.

Aesthetically, Colin Roche's music owes a debt to the work of the poet Francis Ponge, the director Robert Bresson, and the writer Natalie Sarroth.

Colin Roche has worked with video artists, artists, and directors. The result of these collaborations has been art installations and videos. He has written music for ballets, in particular for the Heroes dance performance at the School of Dramatic Art.
The Multilatérale ensemble released a DVD disc of his work in 2006. In 2009 he received a grant from the Academy of Fine Arts; in 2012 the award of the French author's society SACEM for the opera Le carnet de Grim. His work is published by Editions Jobert and Maison ONA.
