An avant-garde emerged in the 1950s in the United States, a country with a young theatre, and then flourished in the 1960s with the Living Theatre, the Performance Group, and the first theatrical experiments of Bob Wilson. Once, at the beginning of the 20th century, Americans had imitated European guest performers; 50 years later Europe imitated America. What caused this rapid flourishing of avant-garde theatre in the U.S.? What were its tasks and strategies, and why are they relevant again? What has replaced the experiments of the era of the "performative coup"? Yulia Kleiman’s lecture will cover the main names, collectives, victories and hot topics of the American theatre from the 1960s to the early 1980s.

Yulia Kleiman is a theatre scholar and critic; a Candidate of Arts, and a Senior Lecturer at the Russian State Institute of Information Science. She is chief editor of Petersburg Theatre journal.
