The organization of Russian theatre, both state and independent, almost without exception assumes the artistic director as a key component. It is he or she who determines a theatre’s aesthetic program, who shapes the individuality of the theatre and its identity. This model may dominant, but it is not alone - the marquee of the non-competition Mask Plus program contains both director's theatres and art-curatorship. However, does a diversity of management models lead to aesthetic independence and a diversity of artistic programs? Is there room for manifestos and conceptual art in our market and social conditions? Is the courage for the avant-garde productions even possible? What are the hot topics? Is there such a thing as the concept of format and boundaries in a theatrical statement? Is the artistic director an artist or a leader, an auteur or an official? Can one negotiate with a director? How are trends created and appropriated in a diverse geographical and social context? We propose to discuss these and other problems of creative design and artistic expression in Russia in 2018.
